It is finally November and the 2019-2020 high school season is set to begin in the next couple of weeks. I have personally hit the road over the last two months and previewing some of the nation’s best programs coming into this season. Schools like IMG Academy (FL), Montverde Academy (FL), Oak Hill Academy (VA), Sierra Canyon (CA), Roselle Catholic (NJ), DeMatha (MD), Sunrise Christian (KS), Long Island Lutheran (NY), and others headline my top-25 nationally. Below you can see who I believe could begin this high school season in the top-25 and more.

Top 10

1. Montverde Academy (FL) Last Season Record: 20-3 – The Montverde Academy Eagles will most likey begin this high school season as the number one team in the nation as they have a very loaded roster on paper. Their backcourt of 2020 G Cade Cunningham and 2020 SG Moses Moody return from last season’s 20-3 GEICO National semifinals squad. They also acquire other top prospects like UNC commit 2020 C Day’Ron Sharpe, 2020 F Scottie Barnes, 2021 SG Langston Love, and Michigan commit 2020 PG Zeb Jackson. Their young core include top ranked prospects like 2022 F Caleb Houston, 2022 G Dariq Whitehead, and 2021 PG Ryan Nembhard. The Eagles will be tough to defeat as always and will look to seek another GEICO Nationals title. Another competitive schedule is expected from Montverde Academy as they are expected to compete in events like the City of Palms Classic, John Wall Invitational, , Memphis National Hoopfest, Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts, host the Montverde Invitational, and more. They will also play host to top-10 ranked DeMatha Catholic (MD) on Thursday December 12th, which is expected to be nationally televised on ESPN.

2. IMG Academy (FL) Last Season Record: 31-1 – The Ascenders of IMG Academy (FL) could arguably start the season as the number one team in the country before this high school season begins. The defending GEICO National champions finished their incredible season last year with a 31-1 overall record. Top ranked prospect, 2020 G Jaden Springer, will lead the pack this season and will try and get his IMG Academy squad to another GEICO Nationals title game. Duke commit 2020 F Jalen Johnson has transferred in and alongside 2020 SG Matt Murrell out of Memphis, Tennessee. Their frontcourt will be loaded and will have one of the best in the country once things get going. Returnees 2022 F Jarace Walker and 2022 F Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, and transfers 2020 C Mark Williams, 2021 F Moussa Diabate, and 2021 F Lynn Kidd round out this year’s IMG frontcourt alongside Jalen Johnson. The Ascenders will certainly have one of the toughest schedules this upcoming season as they are expected to play in the D.C National Hoopfest, Memphis National Hoopfest, City of Palms Classic, Ascenders Classic, Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts, and other key tournaments.

3. Huntington Prep (WV) Last Season Record: 19-5 – The Irish of Hunington Prep (WV) bring back a boat load of their scoring from last season’s 19-5 overall squad headlined by Duke commit 2020 F Jaemyn Brakefield, one of the nation’s top ranked players in the 2020 class. Hunington Prep could have arguably been put into last season’s GEICO Nationals 8-team field a year ago with the quality wins they had and based on their tough schedule. The Irish should begin the season in the nation’s top-5 or at least top-10. Michigan State commit 2020 PG AJ Hoggard will return at the point guard position and newcomers like West Virginia commit 2020 F Isaiah Cottrell, Iowa State commit 2020 SG Dudley Blackwell, Baylor commit 2020 C Zach Loveday, and 2021 SG Shane Dezonie will play quality minutes this season and helping Hunington to reach next year’s GEICO Nationals. They have another monster schedule this season and will be facing top programs like Prolific Prep (CA), Hillcrest Prep (AZ), Sunrise Christian (KS), The Patrick School (NJ), and IMG Academy (FL) just to name a few. They will also be headed to key tournaments nationally including the Cancer Research Classic in Wheeling, West Virginia, Chic-Fil-A Classic in Columbia, South Carolina, and Metro Classic in Toms River, New Jersey.

4. Sierra Canyon (CA) Last Season Record: 32-3 – The Trailblazers of Sierra Canyon are coming off their 32-3 overall record and state championship season from just a year ago. After losing more than half of their scoring power from last season’s squad, the Trailblazers reload their roster headlined by top ranked 2020 prospects Kentucky commit 2020 SG Brandon Boston Jr. and 2020 W Zaire Williams. They do return TCU commit 2020 F Terran Frank and 2022 SG Amari Bailey, one of the nation’s best prospects in the class, and also receive transfers 2020 PG Zaire Wade, son of NBA legend Dwayne Wade, 2022 F Shy Odom, and 2023 SG Bronny James, son of the Lebron James. With a roster like that it is without question that Sierra Canyon should begin this high school season in the preseason top-10. Their schedule this year includes matchups against Long Island Lutheran (NY), Paul VI (VA), Minnehaha Academy (MN), The Patrick School (NJ), Rancho Christian (CA) and others and will play in top events like the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, Spalding Hoophall Classic, Tarkanian Classic, Metro Classic, and more.

5. Prolific Prep (CA) Last Season Record: 30-2 – Prolific Prep, a national program out of California, should make this season’s preseason top-10 and should stay nationally ranked throughout the 2019-2020 high school season. This year’s squad will once again be filled with top talented prospects including a couple key returners 2020 SG Nimari Burnett and Illinois commit 2020 F Coleman Hawkins from last season’s 30-6 squad. Prolific Prep will also bring in 2020 SG Jalen Green, 2021 F Jaden Jones, 2021 F Frank Anselem, and a few other prospects to fill out this year’s roster. Their schedule includes matchups against Hillcrest Prep (AZ), Hunington Prep (WV), La Lumiere (IN), and others. They will also play in national events like the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, Hoophall West, Chic-Fil-A Classic, Spalding Hoophall Classic, and more. This season’s Prolific Prep squad should draw crowds, especially with their new dynamic duo and grassroots teammates, Jalen Green and Nimari Burnett.

6. Hillcrest Prep (AZ) Last Season Record: 35-5 – Arizona powerhouse, Hillcrest Prep, will have another monster season with a monster schedule and very talented roster headlined by Arizona commit 2020 PG Dalen Terry. The Bruins are expected to participate in some of the nation’s top events such as the Hoophall West, Holiday Hoopsgiving, Chic-Fil-A Classic, John Wall Invitational, Flyin To The Hoop, Spalding Hoophall Classic, and more. It is without question that this year’s Hillcrest Prep (AZ) program will have one of the, if not, the hardest schedules in the nation. Their roster also includes other top ranked prospects like 2021 F Michael Foster, 2021 F Keon Edwards, 2020 SG Donovan “Puff” Johnson, 2022 SG Devontes Cobbs, and 2022 C Sadraque Ngang. This is a program that finished the season 35-5 last year and will look to be one of the country’s top teams throughout the 2019-2020 season with new HC Mike Bibby, a former NBA player.

7. Oak Hill Academy (VA) Last Season Record: 25-4 – No big names have transferred into the powerhouse Oak Hill Academy this past season but that does not mean this year’s squad will not be at the top of the rankings this high school season. 2020 SG Cam Thomas, who led the 2019 Nike EYBL in scoring at 29.5 PPG, will lead the pack for this year’s Oak Hill Academy squad alongside 2020 PG Evan Johnson and Virginia Tech commit 2020 PG Darius Maddox. The Warriors should begin the season in the top-10 nationally with their well rounded roster they have coming in for the 2019-2020 high school season. This Warriors team will certainly be deeper than last year’s GEICO National’s squad and they will have a very high chance of capturing their first national championship since 2016. They will be playing in events like the Battle of the Rock, Bojangles Bash, Iolani Prep Classic, Phenom Hoopfest, Bass Pro Shops TOC, Spalding Hoophall Classic, and more this season.

8. Wasatch Academy (UT) Last Season Record: 26-4 – Wasatch Academy, out of Mount Pleasant, Utah, should begin the 2019-2020 high school somewhere in the preseason top-10. The Tigers return a few key pieces from last season’s 26-4 squad who made an appearance in the 2018-2019 GEICO Nationals in New York, New York headlined by Michigan State commit 2020 C Mady Sissoko and Cincinnati commit 2020 PG Mike Saunders Jr. Wasatch Academy also brings in one of the nation’s most talented sophomores 2022 PG Richard Isaacs Jr., who recently helped the U16 USA national team capture a gold medal back in June during the FIBA Americas. They will be playing in events like the Great Western Shootout, Iolani Prep Classic, Cancer Research Classic, and Bob Kirk Invitational. This season should be another solid year for the Tigers and they could possibly make another appearance in the GEICO Nationals next April.

9. DeMatha (MD) Last Season Record: 33-5 – DeMatha Catholic, one of the country’s top tier and consisent programs, will be ranked in the top-10 nationally to begin the 2019-2020 high school season. The Stags lost a couple key prospects from last year’s 33-5 overall squad, including star two-guard Justin Moore, who is now at Villanova. This season’s squad will be led by top ranked prospects Miami bound 2020 F Earl Timberlake Jr. and 2020 C Hunter Dickinson. Both Timberlake Jr. and Dickinson will have solid pieces around them this season to help DeMatha, not only to be one of the nation’s top programs, but to capture a WCAC title. Their schedule this year includes a matchup with Montverde Academy (FL), which is expected to be nationally televised on ESPN, and to compete in major events like the Cancer Research Classic, Spalding Hoophall Classic, and more.

10. Paul VI (VA) Last Season Record: 27-9 – With Duke commit 2020 PG Jeremy Roach returning off of his terrible injury that held him out of his junior season, the Paul VI Panthers should be one of the nation’s top programs once again. The Panthers finished the 2018-2019 season with a 27-9 record with a downgraded squad last season with quality wins over top tier programs like Nicolet (WI), Immaculate Conception (NJ), and a few WCAC opponents. Paul VI also return a pair of young talented prospects like 2021 SG Trevor Keels and 2022 PG Knasir “Dug” McDaniel, who stepped up big time last season with the injuries this team suffered. Besides the tough WCAC opponents this team will have to face, their schedule includes playing in some of the nation’s top national events such as the ARS DC Hoopfest, Slam Dunk On The Beach, Cancer Research Classic, Bass Pro Shop TOC, and Spalding Hoophall Classic.

Teams 11-25

11. Sunrise Christian (KS) Last Season Record: 22-6 – The Buffaloes of Sunrise Christian took a tough lost last season after losing to eventual champs IMG Academy (FL) in the first round of the 2019 GEICO Nationals in New York, New York. With their whole starting line up from last season’s squad departing to college, new faces will emerge for the 2019-2020 season. Newly transfers and top ranked prospects 2021 F Kendall Brown, 2021 F Zach Clemence, and 2020 SG Jayden Stone headline this year’s Sunrise Christian roster. Sunrise Christian will be competing in top tournaments like the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, ARS Hoopfest D.C., City of Palms Classic, Cancer Research Classic, and others this high school season.

12. The Patrick School (NJ) Last Season Record: 17-10 – It was sort of a down year for the New Jersey powerhouse school last season but this season should be extremely different with the nation’s number one ranked prospect in the junior class, 2021 F Jonothan Kuminga, and 2020 PG Noah Farrakhan transferring in. Kuminga and Farrakhan will have the pieces around them this season to have the Celtics nationally ranked and to stay as one of the best teams in the country. The Patrick School has had multiple alumni come out of their program, including Kyrie Irving, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, DeAndre Bembry, and others. Their schedule includes facing top programs like Sierra Canyon (CA), McEachern (GA), IMG Academy (FL), a matchup with Roselle Catholic (NJ) twice, and more.

13. Minnehaha Academy (MN) Last Season Record: 28-3 – The dynamic duo of 2020 PG Jalen Suggs and 2021 F Chet Holmgren return for the 2019-2020 high school season and Minnehaha Academy should be one of the nation’s top programs once again this season. Holmgren blew up last spring and summer and has now been considered a top-5 prospect in his class. The Redhawks finished the 2018-2019 season with only three loses and caputred the class 2A state title. Minnehaha will certainly be the favorite to capture this season’s title and their matchup with powerhous Sierra Canyon (CA) in January should be one to keep an eye on this upcoming season.

14. Roselle Catholic (NJ) Last Season Record: 28-4 – The Roselle Catholic Lions have once again put together one solid group for this upcoming 2019-2020 high school season headlined by 2020 C Cliff Omoruyi, who returns for his senior season. Guys like Florida bound 2020 SG Niels Lane and Xavier bound 2020 SG CJ Wilcher have transferred into the powerhouse school in New Jersey to help out this year’s squad. After watching them at this year’s Northeast Invitational back in early Ocotober, the Lions will be a very tough team to beat this season for any opponent, as their chemistry looks already in sync. They are expected to play a national schedule which includes a stop at the famous Cancer Research Classic.

15. Gonzaga (DC) Last Season Record: 28-9 – The Gonzaga basketball program has always been one of the most consistent over the last decade or so and this year should be no different. This season’s squad will be led by one of the most versatile prospects in the country, Georgetown commit 2020 F Terrance Williams. The Eagles also return two key pieces to their roster with Vanderbilt bound 2020 SG Myles Stute and Butler bound 2020 PG Chuck Harris. Besides their tough schedule in the WCAC, Gonzaga is expected to participate in tournaments like the ARS Hoopfest D.C, Gonzaga D.C Classic, City of Palms Classic, Spalding Hoophall Classic, and Nike Extravaganza this high school season.

16. Long Island Lutheran (NY) Last Season Record: 25-2 – The defending New York State Federation champions, Long Island Lutheran, will certainly be one of the nation’s top tier programs this 2019-2020 high school season with the return of Illinois bound 2020 PG Andre Curbelo and Ohio State bound 2020 F Zed Key. Curbelo and Key headline a solid roster for the Crusaders, who will be playing a national schedule once again this upcoming season. After only losing two games last season, Long Island Lutheran will be expected to play in major events like the Iolani Classic, Beach Ball Classic, Empire Invitational, Montverde Academy Invitational, and Metro Classic.

17. La Lumiere (IN) Last Season Record: 29-1 – The La Lumiere Lakers will have some new faces and new stars emerging this season with Isaiah Stewart, Keion Brooks Jr., and others headed off to college. The Lakers do return a couple key pieces from last season’s GEICO National championship runner-up squad, including their starting point guard 2020 Wendell Green Jr. who is headed to Eastern Kentucky next season. The Lakers acquire Purdue bound 2020 SG Jaden Ivey, who should add scoring power to this season’s squad. La Lumiere is expected to participate in national events like the Chic-Fil-A Classic and Spalding Hoophall Classic.

18. Westtown (PA) Last Season Record: 22-6 – Big time names like Mohammad Bamba and Cam Reddish, who are now in the NBA, have came through the Westtown School basketball program just outside of Philadelphia. This year’s squad will be led by their powerful frontcourt of Pittsburgh bound 2020 F Noah Collier and elite shot blocker 2021 C Frank Kepnang. After finishing the 2018-2019 seaon last year with a 22-6 overall record and capturing their sixth consecutive PAISAA state championship, the Moose will be looking to be crowned state champions once again, along with competing with some of the best programs in the country this season.

19. Bishop Gorman (NV) Last Season Record: 28-5 – The Gaels of Bishop Gorman replaced McEachern (GA) in last year’s GEICO Nationals and gave the 2018 champions La Lumiere (IN) one hell of a game and fight. Their roster this season will return a few key prospects from last year’s squad headlined by top ranked prospsects and their backcourt 2021 PG Zaon Collins and 2021 SG Will McClendon. Bishop Gorman will play a pretty tough national schedule once again like every season by making appearances in the Tarkanian Classic, Nike Extravaganza, Spalding Hoophall Classic, a matchup with Coronado (NV), and more.

20. Rancho Christian (CA) Last Season Record: 26-6 – The nation’s number one ranked prospect, USC bound 2020 C Evan Mobley, resides at Rancho Christian in Temecula, California in Southern Cal. The Eagles finished the season last year with a 26-6 overall record and with some quality wins over Chino Hills (CA), Simeon (IL), and Pinnacle (AZ), Memphis East (TN), and others. Gonzaga bound 2020 G Dominick Harris will also be a main attraction to this year’s squad, a very tough and competitve combo guard. The Eagles will be competing in top major tournaments like the Hoophall Classic West, Capital City Classic, Holiday Classic, Spalding Hoophall Classic, Nike Extravaganza, and more.

21. St. Frances Academy (MD) Last Season Record: 38-7 – The St. Frances Academy Panthers out of Baltimore, Maryland will certainly be one of the nation’s top-25 programs for the 2019-2020 high school season. The Panthers bring back almost half of their roster from last year’s 38-7 overall squad including VCU bound 2020 PG Adrian “Ace” Baldwin. Other players like LSU football bound 2020 SG Jordan Toles and South Alabama bound 2020 W Jamal West also return to this season’s roster. The reigning Baltimore Catholic League champions will play a national schedule once again this season, including stops at the Chicago Elite Classic and City of Palms Classic in December.

22. Roman Catholic (PA) Last Season Record: 24-5 – Head coach Matthew Griffin will have him a very solid squad this season once again after finishing the 2018-2019 high season with a 24-5 overall record. Their 2019-2020 roster is headlined by the nation’s number two ranked sophomore 2022 C Jalen Duren, who helped the USA U16 team capture a gold medal this past June. Key playmakers like 2021 PG Lynn Greer III and 2022 G Justice Williams also return for Roman Catholic this season. The Philadelphia program should keep themselves at least in the top-25 nationally this year. They will be playing in events like the City of Palms Classic, Cancer Research Classic, and more this season.

23. Mayfair (CA) Last Season Record: 26-7 – Mayfair captured the Division 2AA section title last season led by highly ranked prospect 2020 SG Josh Christopher, who has returned for his senior season. They add some fire power to this season’s squad with top-10 prospect 2022 PG Dior Johnson. The Monsoons will certainly be a threat nationally with their new dynamic duo of Christopher and Johnson, who should combine for at least 40 points per game throughout the season. They will play a tough schedule playing in a couple major events, including a stop at the famous Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.

24. Mater Dei (CA) Last Season Record: 29-5 – Newly Kentucky bound 2021 PG Devin Askew will without question be the leader of the pack for powerhouse Mater Dei this high school season along with 2021 F Wilhelm Breidenbach. The powerhouse program will be no stranger to competition at all this season. The Monarchs will be competing in top major events like the Hoophall Classic West, CDM Beach Bash Classic, Tarkanian Classic, Les Schwab Invitational, Cancer Research Classic, Spalding Hoophall Classic, and host of the famous Nike Extravaganza.

25. Archbishop Stepinac (NY) Last Season Record: 14-16 – North Carolina bound 2020 PG R.J. Davis and top-10 prospect Duke bound 2021 F Adrian Griffin Jr. headline this year’s Archbishop Stepinac squad out of New York. The Crusaders certainly have a top-25 national roster including a national schedule for the 2019-2020 high school season. They are expected to participate in tournaments like the City of Palms Classic, Slam Dunk On the Beach, Crusader Classic, Empire Invitational, and Spalding Hoophall Classic. Btoh Griffin Jr. and Davis should put up numbers for the Crusaders this year and will be one of the most exciting duos to spectate.
