The 2019-2020 high school basketball season has officially began for most states around the country and here we take a look at the first updated rankings of the season for The Grind. A lot has happened since we released our preseason rankings back in the beginning of the month and a couple unranked national programs came up big and made some noise over the last couple of weeks. Below you can find out which programs stayed up, dropped, or earned a spot in our top-25.
1. Montverde Academy (FL) (0-0) – The Eagles go 2-0 in their preseason event this past weekend, outscoring their opponents 171-81. Arkansas commit 2020 SG Moses Moody led the way for the powerhouse program on Friday night as he posted 22 points while going perfect from the field (8-8) and beyond the arc (6-6). The Eagles will play their first game of the season back in the home state of Oklahoma State commit 2020 PG Cade Cunningham in Dallas, Texas later this week in the Thanksgiving Hoopfest, where they will face Duncanville (TX) and Houston Yates (TX).
2. IMG Academy (FL) (0-0) – The defending GEICO National Champions make their season debut later today against Central Pointe Christian Academy (FL). Their next two games after that include matchups with Paul VI (VA) and Sunrise Christian (KS), two nationally ranked programs, as part of the D.C. Hoopfest hosted at DeMatha Catholic (MD).
3. Hunington Prep (WV) (0-0) – The Irish officially begin their run back to the ESPN GEICO Nationals this weekend as they are competing in the Hoops and Dreams event in North Carolina and where they will face top programs like Word of God (NC), who features top ranked prospect Michigan commit 2020 F Isaiah Todd, and Combine Academy (NC), a program that defeated Oak Hill Academy (VA) just a few days ago.
4. Sierra Canyon (CA) (3-0) – The star loaded Sierra Canyon Trailblazers began their 2019-2020 high school season in the San Deigo Tip Off Classic this past weekend and where they went undefeated while holding their opponents to just 48.0 points per game. Kentucky commit 2020 SG Brandon Boston Jr. led the way averaging 18.0 points per game through their three games and TCU commit 2020 F Terren Frank was an important factor as well. The Trailblazers will now head to Dallas, Texas post Thanksgiving to compete in the Thanksgiving Hoopfest and where they will face Duncanville (TX) on Saturday night in the American Airlines Center, home of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.
5. Prolific Prep (CA) 9-0 – Prolific Prep competed in DeAndre Ayton’s Duel in the Desert tournament this past weekend and where they kept their undefeated season alive after Texas Tech commit 2020 SG Nimari Burnett hit an incredible half court shot just as time expired in the championship matchup against Dream City Christian (AZ). Burnett averaged 22.0 points per game while snagging down 5.3 rebounds per game while 2020 SG Jalen Green averaged 16.0 points per game during the tournament. Their next stop will also be in Dallas, Texas, where they will compete in the Thanksgiving Hoopfest against Texas’s own Lancaster (TX) and St. Mark’s (TX).
6. Hillcrest Prep (AZ) (6-0) – The Bruins have began the season undefeated and top ranked prospect 2021 F Mike Foster is averaging 21.5 points per game while bringing down 15.0 rebounds per game in their last two games. Hillcrest Prep will still play three more games before their highly anticipated matchup against powerhouse Prolific Prep (CA) on Thursday December 5th as part of the Hoophall Classic West in Phoenix, Arizona, which ESPN is expected to nationally televise.
7. Wasatch Academy (UT) (0-0) – The Wasatch Academy Tigers will begin their 2019-2020 high school season later this week on Tuesday November 26th against Payson (UT) at Wasatch Academy.
8. DeMatha Catholic (MD) (0-0) – The Stags begin their season later this week against Mount St. Joseph (MD) on Saturday November 30th at Loloya Marlyand University.
9. Oak Hill Academy (VA) (10-1) – The Oak Hill Academy Warriors have been led by LSU commit 2020 SG Cam Thomas this season, who is averaging 32.0 points per game so far. The Warriors only lost this season came to Combine Academy (NC) just a few days ago. Oak Hill Academy’s next matchup will be against Teays Valley Christian Prep (WV) on Friday December 6th as part of the Legacy Nissan Classic.
10. Sunrise Christian (KS) (3-0) – The Buffaloes will head to the Dallas, Texas Thanksgiving Hoopfest later this weekend undefeated and will be facing Houston Yates (TX) and Austin Westlake (TX). Their first real matchups before heading to the D.C. Hoopfest on December 7th at DeMatha Catholic (MD).
11. The Patrick School (NJ) (0-0) – The Celtics will make their season post Thanksgiving on December 9th against Watchung Hills Regional (NJ).
12. Minnehaha Academy (0-0) – The Redhawks will make their season post Thanksgiving on December 5th against Monticello (MN).
13. Paul VI (VA) (0-0) – The Panthers make their season debut later this week against Archbishop Carroll (DC) on Friday November 29th. Duke commit 2020 PG Jeremy Roach will play his first game since suffering a serious injury last season.
14. Roselle Catholic (NJ) (0-0) – The Lions will make their season debut post Thanksgiving on December 12th against Newark Eastside (NJ).
15. Gonzaga (DC) (0-0) – The Eagles make their season debut later this week against Bishop McNamara (DC) on Friday November 29th.
16. Long Island Lutheran (NY) (0-0) – The Crusaders will have their third and fourth exhibition games this week on November 27th and November 30th against St. John’s Prep (NY) and Mount St. Michael (NY) before their season debut against St. Dominic (NY) on Wednesday December 4th.
17. La Lumiere (IN) (5-0) – The Lakers will face Indianapolis International (IN) post Thanksgiving on Friday December 6th.
18. Bishop Gorman (NV) (0-0) – The Gaels will make thier season debut post Thanksgiving on Tuesday December 3rd against Aim High Academy (MI).
19. Rancho Christian (CA) (1-0) – The Eagles of Rancho Christian defeated Pacifica Christian/Orange County (CA) 83-77 this past weekend to begin their season 1-0. 2021 F Luke Turner led with a team high 22 points while the USC commit 2020 C Evan Mobley added 16 points and 8 boards.
20. St. Frances Academy (MD) (2-0) – The Panthers move to 2-0 after their win over Andrew Osborne Academy (OH) 62-48 and where VCU commit 2020 PG Ace Baldwin led with 20 points and 10 assists. 2021 F Julian Reese added 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 blocks and 2020 F Jamal West posted 10 points and 10 boards.
21. Westtown School (PA) (2-1) – The Moose hosted their showcase event and where they went 2-0 before taking a defeat to First Love Christian (PA) 71-70 in a fantastic matchup. Their next game will be played next Tuesday on December 3rd against Rock Top (PA).
22. Roman Catholic (PA) (0-0) – Roman Catholic will make their season debut on Thursday December 12th against Lansdale Catholic (PA).
23. Mayfair (CA) (0-0) – Top ranked prospects 2020 SG Josh Christopher and 2022 PG Dior Johnson will make their season debut together this weekend against McEachern (GA) in Atlanta as part of the Thanksgiving Tailgate event this Friday November 29th at McEachern High School.
24. Mater Dei (CA) (0-0) – The Monarchs make their season debut later this week on Saturday November 30th against San Marcos (CA).
25. First Love Christian (PA) (3-0) – The Knights go 3-0 in the Westtown School Showcase to begin the season and defeated Westtown School (PA) 71-70 this past weekend. Penn State commit 2020 SG DJ Gordon led the way with a game high 24 points. The Knights are our newest team to enter our national top-25 and will head to Atlanta, Georgia this weekend to compete in the Holiday Hoopsgiving Event.
25. Archbishop Stepinac (NY) (0-0) – The Crusaders will make their season debut post Thanksgiving on Friday December 6th against Monsignor Scanlan (NY).
