The 2021 National HS Hoopfest was back for this high school season after cancelling last season due to COVID-19 pandemic. Hitting the DMV area to watch hoops is always a pleasure and the event was filled with top teams and prospects. Powerhouse DeMatha Catholic (MD) played host once again in Hyattsville, Maryland. A few young prospects put their talents on display throughout the weekend and received the “Buy Stock Now” tag. College coaches from Duke, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Maryland, Marquette, UNC Greensboro, DePaul, UMBC, and more were all seen in the stands. 2022 G Jameel Brown (Westtown School)
The Penn State Nittany Lions are getting themselves a true hooper next season in Jameel Brown. Brown, a 6-foot-4 guard, decided to play his senior season at powerhouse Westtown School and is taking full advantage. He averaged 18.5 PPG while shooting 41% from the field in the Moose two games in the DMV. Jameel is an all around guard who rebounds the ball consistently, has an underrated passing ability, able to get downhill, finish through contact, and hit shots from three.

2022 F Cam Whitmore (Archbishop Spalding)
Cam Whitmore put on an absolute show in Archbishop Spalding’s one game at DeMatha Catholic this past weekend. The 6-foot-6 high flying forward had some ooo’s and awww’s while he was on the floor. Despite the loss, the senior forward posted 21 points while shooting 60% from the field, 11 boards, and 2 steals. The Villanova commit displayed his freak athletic ability, impactful defense, asset on the glass, and tough finishes at the basket. Whitmore showed his power and strength inside with his football-like frame.

2022 G Seth Hubbard (Huntington Prep)
One of the most undervalued guards in the 2022 class, Seth Hubbard had himself a day during his second game at the National HS Hoopfest in the DMV. The 6-foot-3 guard making a name for himself this season at powerhouse Huntington Prep. Hubbard posted 23 points while shooting 46% from the field, going 5-10 from three, and 7 assists in Huntington’s win on Sunday. The unsigned senior showed his elite shot making skillset while also proving he can run the show at the point guard position as well dishing out over five assist.

2023 SG DeShawn Harris-Smith (Paul VI)
The next big time guard coming out of powerhouse Paul VI (VA) in Fairfax, Virginia? DeShawn Harris-Smith. The 6-foot-5 guard looked tremendous on the big stage with the Panthers in their two games this past weekend at the National HS Hoopfest. Harris averaged 16.5 PPG while shooting 61% from the field, going 3-5 from 3, 7.5 RPG, and 3.0 SPG in two games during the weekend. Definitely has some Trevor Keels in his game, former PVI player now at Duke. DeShawn has a football like frame, spaces the floor with his 3PT shooting, active hands defensively, and uses his size well when attacking.

2022 G Samuel Gibbs (Archbishop Stepinac)
Samuel Gibbs was one of the biggest surprises during the weekend in the DMV, leading Archbishop Stepinac (NY) over St. John’s College (DC) in their only game at the National HS Hoopfest. The senior guard put up 21 points while shooting 47% from the field, going 3-7 from 3, and 5 boards in the win. The 6-foot-3 guard is a very fundamentally sound prospect. Showed he can be crafty, finishing through traffic, and hit his perimeter shots. Samuel is a lefty guard with quality size and showed leadership as the underdog coming into the matchup.

2022 PG Dionte Johnson (The Patrick School)
Dionte Johnson has always been one of the tougher guards in the state of New Jersey. Coming into his senior season with The Patrick School, Johnson had himself a game despite the loss in the The Patrick School’s lone game out in the DMV. The Celtics guard posted 22 points while shooting 43%, going 4-7 from 3, and 7 assists. The 6-foot-2 point guard displayed his up north toughness finishing through contact, facilitating the offense, knocking down jumpers, and being a scrappy defender where he captured two steals. The unsigned senior should end up somewhere at the next level with his passion and competitiveness.

2022 F Tyrell Ward (DeMatha Catholic)
Xavier commit Tyrell Ward had a stock boosting type grassroots season back in the spring and summer and that momentum has crossed over to the high school season. The 6-foot-7 wing posted 23 points while shooting 40% from the field and 7 boards against top-25 ranked Westtown School (PA) in the first day of the National HS Hoopfest. Ward is a solid wing shooter but can certainly do more than just that. He was able to snag several rebounds in both games, displayed his athleticism, movement without the ball, and awareness on the defensive end effecting passing lanes.
