Had a chance to speak to one of the nation’s top scorers in that 2023 class, Chris Johnson, recently regarding his recruitment, his recent transfer to powerhouse Montverde Academy (FL), and more.
The 6-foot-4 guard averaged 20.0 PPG, 6.0 APG, 5.0 RPG, and 2.0 SPG last season at Fort Bend Elkins (TX) during his junior season. He has the ability to score from all levels of the floor, an underrated passer, quick first step, and finishes through contact consistently when driving to the basket.
Johnson holds offers from Kansas, Arkansas, Alabama, LSU, Memphis, Creighton, Houston, Georgia, Ole Miss, New Mexico State, Maryland, and plenty more.
He tells me Kansas, Arkansas, Texas, Ole Miss, LSU, Arizona State, and Maryland have been in contact with him the most recently.
“I haven’t taken one since the high school season, but yes I have visits being planned with Kansas and Arkansas but no date yet, just sometime in the fall.” Chris told me regarding which schools he plans on visiting over the next few months.
The rising senior most recently announced he will be transferring to powerhouse Montverde Academy (FL), the two-time defending GEICO Nationals champions and the No. 1 ranked team as of now coming into the 2022-2023 high school season, for his senior year.
I asked Chris how does he feel knowing that he is joining a powerhouse program and how does he see himself fitting in under Kevin Boyle’s system?
“Just going out there, having fun, and just playing hard. If I do those, after watching them play a lot last year, I feel like I’m going to fit in perfectly with them.” He replied.
He will be joining the likes of other highly rated prospects like 2023 F Kwame Evans Jr., 2024 F Amier Ali, 2023 PG Drayvn Gibbs-Lawhorn (Purdue), 2023 G Marvel Allen, and 2025 F Cooper Flagg.
Chris runs with JL3 Elite (TX), a Houston-based program named after the great John Lucas, in the Nike EYBL. I asked Chris how does he feel on their chances making the Nike Peach Jam in late July and does he feel they can make a run to win it all?
“Yessir and with additions of Kendrick De Luna and R.J. Jones, I feel like we should have a really good run at Peach Jam.” He replied. He runs with other elite prospects like Zayden High, Malik Presley, Trenton Walters, and others.
